Christian V. Esguerra is an anchor and managing editor of ANC’s daily morning newscast, “Early Edition.”  He also writes in-depth stories for the ABS-CBN News website, covering issues on politics, elections, governance, human rights, the South China Sea dispute, the peace process, and the armed conflict in Mindanao. He hosts a weekly podcast called “Matters on Fact.” He’s been a journalist for 19 years, beginning his career with the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He also teaches political reporting at the University of Santo Tomas’ journalism program.

The study explores the extent of elite capture in Philippine politics, focusing on the House of Representatives where committee chairmanships are said to be influenced by big businesses, backing certain congressmen to either advance or protect their interests, and by a sitting Philippine president. This puts in serious question the kind of representative democracy in the country where politicians may not necessarily be promoting public interest. The study will look into the behaviour and voting patterns of congressmen on specific issues and proposed legislation.
